Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get an IV iron infusion?
Simply have your health care provider send in a referral form and we take care of the rest.
What kind of iron will I get?
Ferra offers both Ferinject (ferric carboxymaltose) and Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose). Both are safe and well tolerated. Your hematologist will discuss which formulation is best suited to you.
How often do I need infusions?
This depends on your unique clinical circumstances, including the underlying cause of your iron deficiency and your response to treatment.
What is the typical timeframe?
Most patients are booked for their infusion visit within one week of the referral being received. The infusion itself takes approximately 15-20 minutes, and the entire visit is typically completed in under an hour.
Will I have to pay for the iron infusion?

IV iron is a prescription medication dispensed through a pharmacy, so the cost depends on your individual drug coverage. Most extended health plans cover some or all of it. For patients who may be eligible, your hematologist will request Special Authority coverage through BC PharmaCare on your behalf. Special Authority will only apply if you are enrolled in Fair PharmaCare and have met your annual deductible. Information on how to register for Fair PharmaCare is here. If you have questions about your coverage, a pharmacist can help clarify.

Ferra Clinic does not charge an infusion fee to patients. The medication is administered by highly experienced nurses at our clinic at no additional cost to you.
